LATEST NEWS OF FREYA OUR GUIDE DOG
Freya - Pupdate 3
Hello, I’m Sophie, Freya’s trainer. I’m excited to say that Freya has moved to Maidstone and I’ll be teaching her more of the skills she’ll need in order to become a guide dog.
Freya has settled into her new environment well. She’s staying with a boarder who drops her off to me in the mornings, ready for her day of training. Her boarder is very fond of her and said she was happy and relaxed from the moment she arrived. She’s a very adaptable dog and takes to new people and places quickly, which is a great skill for a guide dog.
To begin our training, I first worked on developing a bond with Freya. It’s important to have a good bond when training a guide dog as it lets them put their trust and confidence in you and they are then more likely to pay attention! Freya is such an affectionate dog, so it didn’t take long.
I’ve been using clicker training with Freya to help her learn and she’s responding to this really well. She’s currently learning to find objects such as doors and chairs. When I say ‘find a chair’, Freya will take me to an empty chair on a bus or in a shop, and this will allow her future owner to get around freely and independently in busy environments. She’s showing initiative in her ‘left’ and ‘right’ commands too. When she looks in the right direction I give her lots of praise, so she builds a sense of direction.
Freya is great fun to work with and definitely has a cheeky side to her personality. She can be a bit reluctant to sit at curbs, so I’m working on this with her using lots of treats! But, she’s very intelligent and generally has an easy-going, laid back personality, so it can be funny to watch her be a bit stubborn sometimes!
She’s taken well to her harness too and showed no body sensitivity. Some guide dogs are a bit wary of wearing the harness at first, so we have to work at building up their confidence. It’s great that Freya’s taken it all in her stride. The first time she wore it, she strutted around as if to show it off!
I’ve got high hopes for Freya. I can’t wait to tell you more in her next Pupdate in October.

ROAD CLOSURES ON THOMAS STREET FROM MONDAY 14th -FRIDAY 18th NOVEMBER
Dear parents,
Road Closures
We have been informed today From Monday 14th November until at least Friday 18th November, you will not be able to drive down Thomas Street outside our school due to the road being closed because of gas mains laying. Thomas Street will turn into a one way system meaning people will ONLY be able to drive up Thomas Street from the Portadown Road under the Annagh Bridge and up to the lights outside school. You will not be able to come down Hanover Street, come from Meadow Lane or upper Thomas Street from the main street in town. We have made allowances that the only traffic which will be allowed to come down the street will be the Ulsterbus so it can stop outside our school.
We ask that everyone keeps this in mind next week. You will have to park in side streets and walk children to school or park in the car park across from the Health Centre/behind the Baptist Church and walk children around to the entrance to the school.
We would ask that you leave extra time for your journey to facilitate these traffic road closures.
Remember you will NOT be able to drop children outside the school gate for at least one week.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Regards Ms Mulholland

DITCH THE DARK DAY
Dear Parent,Guardian
As part of the Sustrans Active Schools Travel programme we are holding a DITCH THE DARK DAY on Tuesday 8th November 2016.
It is a non- uniform day where we are encouraging children to walk, scoot or cycle to school, to dress as brightly as possible and to decorate their bikes and scooters in a creative and safe manner.
We will hold an assembly to discuss the importance of being bright and seen on darker mornings. Prizes will be awarded to those who have made a special effort and some KS2 pupils will have the opportunity to be involved in hi-vis science experiments.
Parents / carers are encouraged to accompany children on their journey.
Alternatively a meeting point has been organised for 8.30am at the car park under the Annagh Bridge where children who wish to travel with staff and volunteers are welcome.
This will be a fun day while highlighting the importance of being seen while travelling to school.
We hope you will support this important safety day.
Regards Ms Mulholland and Mrs Mc Anespie
Jako część programu “Sustrans Active School Travel” w Presentation P.S odbÄ™dzie siÄ™ “DITCH THE DARK DAY”, zaplanowany na 8 listopada.
Uczniowie, którzy wÅ‚ożą sporo zaangażowania w dekoracjÄ™ swojego rowera/ hulajnogi i jaskrawy ubiór zostanÄ… nagrodzeni. Niektórzy uczniowie ze starszych klas bÄ™dÄ… mieli okazjÄ™ wziąć udziaÅ‚ w eksperymencie naukowym “hi-vis”.
Rodziców/ opiekunów zachÄ™camy do towarzyszenia swojemu dziecku w drodze do szkoÅ‚y.
